Our Remote Culture: Connection Without Borders
Fostering relationships within a remote team is challenging, but we've developed a thoughtful framework that keeps our team connected and engaged. Here are some of the ways we nurture our remote work culture:
Social Channels:
- We leverage various social platforms to maintain a constant flow of communication. From Slack channels dedicated to hobbies and interests to regular updates on company news, our team stays informed and connected.
Small Groups:
- Small group interactions are crucial for building deeper connections. These smaller settings allow for meaningful conversations and collaborative work, whether it's a project-based team or an interest group.
CEO Open Office Hours:
- Our CEO, Brian Whorley, hosts open office hours where team members can drop in to discuss ideas, seek advice, or simply have a chat. This informal setup mimics the spontaneity of in-person office interactions.
Bi-Annual Summits:
- Twice a year, we get together as a full team for intensive collaboration sessions and team-building activities. These summits are a mix of strategic planning, workshops, and social events reinforcing our shared mission and values. One is in our home office, and one is off-site. It's possible to maintain and sustain relationships remotely, but we believe it's important to get together in person throughout the year and deepen and strengthen those relationships. Check out our recent blog about our time in Scottsdale!
Virtual Gatherings:
- To keep the camaraderie alive, teams get together for virtual happy hours, coffee breaks, and even board game nights. These fun and relaxed sessions help us unwind and connect on a personal level.
Why CoMO? Discovering the Heart of Our Home Office
While our team operates from various locations, our home office in Columbia, Missouri (affectionately known as "CoMO"), plays a vital role in our company's culture. Here's why CoMO is the perfect base for our operations:
Abundant and Affordable Housing:
- Whether you're looking for a majestic estate, a condo on the golf course, or a family-friendly neighborhood, Columbia offers a range of housing options to suit every lifestyle and budget.
Low Cost of Living:
- Columbia consistently ranks below the national average for the cost of living, allowing our team members to enjoy a high quality of life without breaking the bank.
Recreation:
- Sports enthusiasts can cheer for the Mizzou Tigers or participate in the Show-Me State Games. For outdoor lovers, state parks offer boating, fishing, hiking, and more. The MKT Trail provides a scenic route for walking, jogging, and biking.
Culture & Arts:
- Columbia is a hub of cultural activity, from the lively farmers market to the renowned True/False Film Fest. The city also boasts a variety of venues — including Jesse Hall, Missouri Theater, The Blue Note, Rose Music Hall, and Maplewood Barn Theatre — which showcase a wide range of concerts, musicals, comedy shows, and plays.
