FAQs
Get answers to common (but key) questions about Paytient.
Who is eligible for Paytient?
Paytient is a benefit you can use if your employer or health plan sponsor it. Your Paytient membership is tied to your job or health plan, so if your employment or health plan coverage ends, so does your access to Paytient. But remember, if you still owe money on your Paytient card, you'll need to pay it back, even if you're no longer employed or enrolled in the sponsored health plan.
How does Paytient work?
Say you visit an ENT doctor for a sinus infection that won’t go away, and you leave with a $150 bill. You can split that charge into 10 payments of $15 — or five payments of $30. For each transaction, you’ll pick an interest-free payment plan that fits your budget.
Can Paytient be used for family members/dependents?
Sure! Paytient HPAs can be used to pay for care for the cardholder as well as their loved ones.
How much does this cost?
You pay back what you spend on your Health Payment Account and not a penny more! Your employer or your health plan pay a fee per member per month to make your HPA available to you.
How do I use the virtual Paytient card?
Simply tap the purple card in the Paytient app to view your card information. You can then use this number for qualifying transactions or input the information into your healthcare provider’s payment system.
How do I set up a payment method?
Different groups have different payment methods available. You can easily connect a bank account or log in to explore additional options. Our support team can also take payments over the phone or via chat.
Can I adjust my payment plans?
Paytient understands circumstances change. Our support team is happy to adjust a payment plans to fit your budget better. You can do so by chatting with customer support in the app, by calling 866-345-9591, or by emailing hello@paytient.com for assistance.
Where can I use Paytient?
Paytient Health Payment Accounts can be used for care in approved categories. Not all categories are approved for all partners, so log in to check the categories for which your card has been approved. HPA cards work at most providers that accept Visa as long as the merchant bills to a covered category (e.g., medical, dental) accepted by your partner program.
Rarely, a provider might be owned by another company or otherwise categorized with a different MCC code that isn’t included in your program, causing your card to be unexpectedly declined. In those cases, you can reach out to our customer support team for help.
Does Paytient work for previous medical bills?
Yes. Your HPA can be used to pay bills still owed to providers, as long as they are not being collected by a different party other than the provider.
How does an HPA work with an HSA or FSA?
Using your HSA and FSA4 accounts to repay your Paytient balance are great ways to capitalize on tax advantages. You can add your HSA or FSA account through Plaid as a payment method in your Paytient account and then use them to cover any qualifying expenses. You cannot pay for veterinary expenses with an HSA or FSA. Please refer to the IRS website to determine whether transactions qualify as HSA/FSA expenses — and remember to always keep your receipts!
Is a credit check required?
No. Paytient does not check credit or pull credit scores before opening an HPA. We ask members to self-report income and expenses during onboarding before we extend credit to ensure we lend responsibly and comply with federal and state lending regulations. Some users may not be able to access the service due to regulatory reasons.
Can I use my Paytient card at an ATM?
No, you can’t use your Paytient card at an ATM to withdraw cash. Attempting to use your card at an ATM may impact your access to Paytient and could result in account closure. Log in to see the categories for which your card has been approved, or reach out to our customer support team for help.
