Jodi Hubler of Paytient

A couple of weeks ago, Jodi Hubler joined our mission to help people access and afford healthcare as our first and only independent director.

With 20 years of experience on the buy and sell side of health benefits, Jodi brings with her significant experience in helping innovative healthcare financing solutions scale to help guide and catalyze Paytient’s growth trajectory.

Jodi has led teams focused on redesigning how health plans work by removing deductibles, offering clear costs before treatment, and lowering healthcare expenses for employers and employees, so she is familiar with the challenges innovators face in the employee benefits market.

To welcome her to the Paytient team, we had a great conversation on our podcast.

Making Her Way in Healthcare

“The first fifteen years of my career were focused on the opportunity to invest in, specifically and only, transforming the healthcare sector. And then why, choosing to stay with it is the law of impermanence. The opportunity and the problem set, said interchangeably like two sides of a coin, is so large, so intellectually stimulating, and so fraught with the need for people to really choose to actively engage themselves in it, that there's always the next opportunity. There's always the next problem, and I think that has just continued to draw me in deeper and deeper and deeper."

Creating Opportunity Out of Problems

“This idea that the financing of healthcare is a novel space is true, in the application of the technologies with which we can apply now that we didn't have the luxury of being able to apply previously. I can still remember handwriting time cards and hand calculating vacation and benefit cards. I think we have also been benefited by brilliant people, Brian and others like him, that see the world in a technicolor, that bend the corners to look at things. And instead of viewing it as a problem that needs to be optimized, they'd look at it as a problem that is ripe for new solution sets. They have the ability to turn that curve and say, you know what, what if we looked at that problem from a different angle?”

Moving the Industry Forward Through Personalized Benefits

“We've talked for the better part of my 30 years about the Holy Grail being individual product creation inside of group risk pooling. This idea that you would have the ability to really tailor your uniqueness, and I see that it's on the cusp. It's being evolved. If you would have told me 30 years ago that we would have pet insurance, you would have talked to Jodi right out of grad school with a labor economics background saying you're going to be able to arrange the products and services that then can naturally start to intuitively fit for a person. We're starting to see people more than just showing up for a job to be done and sending them home tired. We’re seeing more of them in their humanity. More expansive, more tailored to that ability for the person to show up as their whole self and bring their unique needs. So I'm excited about the personalization, I'm excited about what Paytient is doing around the empathetic way to finance healthcare.”
